Miami has hundreds of used car lots, and they don't all operate the same way. The good news: the difference between a good purchase and a headache almost always comes down to the same handful of steps. This guide walks you through them in order, no filler.
1. Set your real budget
The sticker price isn't what you'll pay each month, and it isn't the only thing you'll pay in total. Before you look at a single car, add Florida sales tax, registration and title, and dealer fees on top of the vehicle price. Then figure out whether the resulting monthly payment still leaves room for insurance, gas and maintenance without squeezing you.
A simple rule many financial advisors use: keep the car payment itself under 15% of your gross monthly income, and total car + insurance + gas under 20%.
2. Narrow your search to what matters
Make two lists before you search: what you need (space for your family, highway comfort, a certain trunk size) and what you want but can flex on (color, brand, extra features). This keeps a salesperson — or yourself — from talking you into a car that doesn't actually fit your life.
As for mileage, there's no magic number: a 60,000-mile car with a full maintenance record is usually a better buy than a 30,000-mile car with no history at all.
3. Check the vehicle history
A CARFAX report (or similar service) tells you whether the car has a reported accident, whether the title is clean, how many owners it's had, and whether the mileage matches service records. Never buy a used car without seeing this report first — any legitimate dealer will show it to you without hesitation.

4. Inspect it yourself
Before the test drive, walk around the car in a well-lit spot, ideally in daylight. These are the four points that reveal the most about a vehicle's real condition:
Exterior
Panel gaps, mismatched paint, rust around wheel wells and fresh undercoating (a sign of hidden repairs).
Tires & brakes
Even tread wear across all four tires, matching brands, and no vibration when braking.
Interior
Wear on the seat, pedals and steering wheel should roughly match the mileage on the odometer.
Under the hood
No fluid leaks, no burnt-oil smell, and fluids that look clean rather than dark or gritty.
5. Take a real test drive
Don't just circle the block. Drive on the highway to feel how it handles at speed, brake firmly in a safe spot to check brake response, and run the air conditioning — essential in Miami — for at least ten straight minutes.
6. Understand every fee before you sign
This is the part where most buyers feel blindsided, and it shouldn't be that way. Any honest dealer shows you its fees in writing before you sign anything. At Ambar Motors, these are the three fixed fees that appear on every sale:
- Dealer Fee $999
- Pre-Delivery Service $799
- Electronic Fee $999
Ask about these fees at any lot before you negotiate price — the "final" number only makes sense once they're already included.

Knowing your buying power before you negotiate gives you real leverage: you can walk away from any offer that doesn't make sense. If you want to understand how pre-approval, loan terms and APR actually work, we have a full financing guide that covers exactly that.
And if you have a car to trade in, check our trade-in guide before deciding whether it makes more sense to sell it yourself or use it as a down payment.
